In 70 packs of Whispers of the Old Gods I only opened one legendary, and for that matter I barely opened up any epics either. ![]() Bombs tend to be legendary cards and legendary cards are expensive. While this creates an interesting flow of gameplay with many more back and forth exchanges than wild, it also introduces a problem: money. Nearly every player could have a playset after only a few days of playing the game.īut in the current standard environment, the game is decided by timely drops of powerful bombs. The aforementioned Piloted Shredder was a common and was considered one of the best cards in the format. In the previous wild format, games were mostly decided by powerful commons. The increased power of removal has also made combo decks less powerful, which can also be attributed to the smaller card set that standard decks are made from. Buying or Selling?īecause the game has slowed down, aggressive decks and tempo oriented decks have become harder to play while control and mid-range decks have become much more popular. This lowered power level is yet another reason why the format has slowed down so significantly. ![]() Boom, sporting random effects that might backfire on you and being particularly vulnerable to spot removal like Polymorph. Most of the Old God cards are arguably weaker than Dr. They need to be played three whole turns after Boom and no extra spells can be played with them. Boom was a perfect example of this, a game winner at 7 mana that also extra summoned minions that did even more damage when they died. In the previous format, the most expensive card you played cost seven, maybe eight mana. This also makes removal and board clears much more powerful, making you more likely to see an empty board on both sides throughout a match.īut the biggest reason for the new, slower, gameplay is the existence of old god cards. Powerful deathrattle minions that replaced themselves, like Piloted Shredder and Haunted Creeper, are gone, making it harder to hold board position. It’s also because minions are a lot less sticky. You can’t swing for 14+ in one turn with Druid anymore nor can you whittle away the opponent’s life with a Leper Gnome. This is partially because the damage efficient minions and combos in basic and classic have been nerfed. The new standard format is much slower than what we were used to. This is a very different Hearthstone than the one you remember.
